"And I saw the river over which every soul must pass to reach the kingdom of heaven and the name of that river was suffering; and I saw a boat which carries souls across the river and the name of that boat was love." - St. John of the Cross
This vision of St. John of the Cross inspired this painting. The original piece was a 16 x 20 acrylic painting on canvas paper. The idea behind this is that life is riddled with suffering. The skulls represent the trials of life and in the end, death. The boat, called Love, is helping the soul to pass over from death to Eternal Life and everlasting joy. Love helps us to cross over, redeeming all of the pain and suffering we have endured. Even in the very midst of our darkest hour, Love was there, helping us to carry the burden, and finding redemption in it. The reward for this enduring agony comes at the moment the suffering finally ends and everlasting peace awaits.
